Ekhaya Multi Arts Center
Opened in 2003, the Kwa Mashu Township based arts Center under eThekwini Municipality of Durban runs the Programmes of Acting, Dance, Music, Multimedia and Visual Art. It has annual Events of film, theatre, poetry, heritage and music that are run quarterly for the showcase of creative and artistic talents from the community. Facilities of the Center include a fully-fledged theatre, a dance studio, a music recording studio, a video editing suite, multimedia and computer lab, a community radio station facility, outdoor stage, concert square and visual art studio. It is a registered NPO & NPC with an Advisory Board. The Center’s core staff consists of Center Director, Center Manager, Administrative Secretary, Arts Coordinator, Finance Officer, a Cleaner, a Gardner, three security staff. Complementing the core staff are part-time trainers and facilitators (6). The Center annually produces professional touring theatre productions. It also runs an Arts in Schools programme as well as Outreach Programme. It has variety partnership with various Durban’s twin city sister cities in Leeds, Chicago, New Orleans, Bremen, Kwa Bulawayo, Nantes and Los Angeles. The Center was founded by Edmund Mhlongo.
