Rorkes Drift Art Centre
Rorke's Drift is more than a famous battlefield - it's a unique and successful venture in cross-culture art and craft production. The Rorkes Drift Art & Craft Centre was established in 1962 by Swedish artists Ulla and Peder Gowenius. A Fine Art School forms parts of the Centre’s activities. The centre with its studios, shop and guest houses is located on a farm which had been the largest Swedish mission station in Southern Africa until late 1950's. The Centre’s focus is on Art and Craft divided into manufacturing of African patterned carpets, tapestries, textile products manufactured with hand printed fabrics, hand printed fabrics, ceramics and clay, and beadwork. The Centre’s core staff includes the Centre Manager, Supervisor Ceramic Studio, Supervisor Weaving Studio, Supervisor Textile Printing Studio and Office Administrator. Facilities include Art and Craft Shop, weaving workshop, ceramic making facilities, and a beadwork workshop.
